The Murky World of Barry Adamson

Mute

When I heard that Barry Adamson is a former Bad Seed, I did what a good reviewer probably shouldn’t: I listened to the CD with a preconceived notion of what the CD should sound like. I was expecting some dark and filmic soundscapes, sort of like the scene in many movies where the hero is walking down a cold and rainy city street. Filmic this is, yes, but more James Bond than Jean-Luc Goddard. This album even has songs called “007, A Fantasy Bond Theme” and “The Man With the Golden Arm!” Mr. Adamson can bring in the noise AND the funk. The soundtrack to seedy clubs and even seedier motels. Rumble-ass basslines, indeed.
