Brokeback is Douglas McCombs of Tortoise composing songs centered around the bass. There are a few other elements involved here and there thanks to fellow bandmates and others, but the bass is the central instrument – sometimes the only instrument – and the driving inspiration. The songs are spacious and atmospheric with somewhat of a cinematic quality. A wonderful mood is created and maintained throughout the whole album. Very soothing. Gorgeous sounds, great songs. A favorite for a while now.
