Rachel’s bring post-rock elements into the classical realm with an all-star cast of math contemporaries. I know next to nothing about classical music, but there are enough familiar elements that this doesn’t seem so alien and strange to me. Rich instrumentation beautifully played and recorded. Lots of strings, piano, guitar, harpsichord – the list goes on, all nicely used.
My favorite Rachel’s record thus far. Sea and the Bells is the runner up, but the music on that tended to lean to the moodier side of things and therefore ended up getting listened to less. Selenography is much brighter and peppier, and still breathtakingly gorgeous. Fluid compositions that surge and subside. Nice packaging, complete with beautiful photography that compliments the music perfectly.
