Ultraphonic

The Cotton Club, Atlanta, GA • October 16, 1999

Ultraphonic is on a mission to make Atlanta a rock n’ roll town. Along with local acts the Pleasantdales and Sevendust, lead man Jason Fowler wants Atlanta to be recognized as a breeding ground for rock musicians. Playing the Cotton Club as the middle act of a three band show, they performed straight rock n’ roll to a devoted audience of screaming girls and head-nodding guys. The music was a clean, riff-driven sound complementing Jason’s smooth vocals. There was nothing watered down in this quartet. They played loud and with a lot of punch. It was the kind of music that made the fat guy in the back jump around and spill his beer on his male buddies.

The band consists of Jason Fowler on vocals and guitar, Tom Conroy on drums, and brothers Brent and Brooks Wilson on bass and guitar respectively. The high energy music allows for Jason to pose and jump around on stage. It took about five songs, but finally, the Wilson brothers remembered they were in a rock band and began some posing of their own. Mixed into the set are some standard teary rock ballads and enough roscoe smoke to ferret out the Branch Davidians. The band makes Stockbridge, GA their home, and this lineup has been around for nine months, touring the southeast. Their CD gets airplay on 99X’s Locals Only show, and they bring in a good crowd.

In a time when it seems like a band cannot succeed without an acoustic guitar, I hope Ultraphonic accomplishes their mission. ◼
