On Pure Diamond Gold , the Sadies take us through a midnight ride in deep dark country, where the moon and the moonshine compete for attention, and I’ll be darned if you can’t smell the sea from there. The album opens with “16 Mile Creek,” an intense thirty-second blast of high-octane breakdown, but on tracks like the following “Rat Creek,” the Sadies sound like the spawn of Dick Dale, powering monster riffs over nice slow rolling drums and bass. “It’s Nothing To Me” is a tale of barroom tragedy, a saga of hitting on the wrong girl as told by a helpful bystander. The Sadies version of country music may rub some purists the wrong way – the Sadies seem to share a lot of musical vision with Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, the Canadian trio that gave us the theme to The Kids in the Hall . Still, their askew instrumentals and the occasional vocal piece are enough to satisfy those looking for the fringe of country/surf music.
