Pootie Tang
Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture
Hollywood
When Shaquille O’Neal (“Yo, Yo, Yo-Yo, Yo!”) graces a soundtrack, it’s a pretty good bet that it’ll suck. Fortunately for Mr. O’Neal, the artists on the Pootie Tang soundtrack could suck just fine without him. Hosting a horrible remix of “Make Em Say Ugh” by Master P, kiddie porn-esque 702, Bell Biv DeVoe’s ’80s hit “Poison,” pre-pubesecent Lil J (“My name be in your girl’s mouth like braces”), a gross example of Karl Clanton trying to make pimp rap sound smooth and bluesy (which doesn’t work out, in case you’re wondering), and a handful of typical sappy R&B songs complete with drippy sounding rain, this soundtrack is more than enough to make me say “Ugh.” If you can’t help yourself and must have this rather hideous collection, the only two small, remotely decent songs are Erykah Badu’s “Southern Girl” and the cheesy, soul-tinged “I Want To Be Your Man” by Zapp and Roger, which is perfect make-out music if your partner has a sense of ’70s musical humor. Otherwise, this is best used as a flotation device for a mouse in a pool, or in a pinch, as a mirror (if you must get that ghetto).
