The Bottle Let Me Down

Various Artists

Bloodshot

Before you start thinking this is yet another tribute to Merle Haggard (not that anything would be wrong with that…) the bottle in question is most likely filled with a special formula. Baby formula, that is. This collection of children’s songs – from “Red Red Robin” by Rosie Flores to “On Top of Old Spaghetti” by Jane Baxter Miller – should keep the young ones hushed up in the back seat, while not sending parents into a froth at yet another playing of the Aladdin soundtrack. Of course, being on Bloodshot, you get a few ringers in here. “Sad & Dreamy (The Big 1-0)” by Alejandro Escovedo is a depressing look at a first birthday, and “Godfrey” by Robbie Fulks is just plain sick. In a good way, mind you. This is an enjoyable listen, and anytime to get to hear Kelly Hogan sigh “Ok, I’m in the bathtub” (“Rubber Duckie”) is A-OK. Plus, your kids will giggle like loons throughout, particularly at “Funky Butt” by Devil in a Woodpile. Make sure this one is in the minivan’s changer for long trips.
