Brienn Perry

Positively

Pyrus Jazz

Way above-average late-night crooner jazz that doesn’t even pretend to offer anything unique. Perry has a beautiful, silky smooth voice, and his band’s playing is calm and restrained, never giving in to the temptation of branching out in any particular direction. The set list offers few if any surprises – loads of Cole Porter, Gershwin, the lot – with only a few slight detours into more expressively steamy lover’s jazz (as on the baritone blues of “Please Send Me Someone to Love”). Put this on when you’re feeling dead tired or just a little sentimental, and it’ll make you feel a tad bit better in no time. There’s a lot to be said for that.
