Teen Idols

Nothing to Prove

Fueled By Ramen

The Nashville punk pop quartet Teen Idols recently disbanded after six years and four albums together, but they managed to squeeze out these last twelve tracks before heading separate ways. Nothing to Prove proudly lives up to its title, being the sound of a band that held few discernible musical ambitions.

Repeating the formula from their earlier albums, this is punk-pop infused with the spirit of middle-of-the-road ’70s rock with a few hints of ’50s-leaning rockabilly thrown in for good measure. And, for all its traces of Blondie and Cheap Trick, it still ends up sounding like another version of New Found Glory or Less Than Jake. Every song on here seems written with the intent of gaining radio airplay, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, the sing-along trickery constantly gets in the way of original and interesting ideas.

You’ll find a healthy enough dose of catchy hooks on here, but there’s so little to separate this from every other band in a similar vein, that it all becomes rather ridiculous after a while. Good enough for a song or two, but at 12 songs (over a mere half hour), even diehard pop-punk fans will find this a bit tiresome.
