Writers are liars, but…
…that doesn’t mean they can ignore the truth. That’s from Stephen King’s National Book Foundation speech, and much of the rest of what he has to say is as good. Among the reasons I like King is that he’s never seemed to take his own last name too seriously, if you take the point. He knows exactly who he is and what he can do, and isn’t and can’t.
And although some of his fans cross the line to stalker and then to dangerous stalker (my all-time favorite: I don’t know if he’s still around, but there used to be a guy who would show up at King’s appearances holding a sign accusing the writer of having been the one who actually killed John Lennon), he’s treated them with respect, Misery notwithstanding.
