I think I need someone to explain the whole Rapture/DFA phenomena to me, because I’m just not getting it. For the most part this just seems like a more polished strain of the dance punk virus that’s been plaguing NYC’s music scene for the past couple of years. It’s not that indie music always, and only, appealed to the literati, but Echoes sets a definite course for airheaded style over substance. Granted, tracks like “House of Jealous Lovers” and “Sister Savior” are the perfect finales to a long and pointless dance-off, but I just don’t know… I’ll also admit that this is the kind of album where context is everything. Hearing just one track from here in a bar or club in among the ludicrously overplayed rap and hip-hop would make my night. Currently though, in my apartment, in one of America’s ugliest cities, it only gets one tapping toe. Maybe I’m just too old and can remember back to when New Order was doing largely the same bass and keyboard heavy dance floor anthems more successfully. I’ll have to pass on this.
