The Sound of the Crowd

Just a quick observation

Kerry should have announced his choice for VP by now. By playing footsie with John McCain for so long, he’s ensured that whoever he does name will be seen as second choice, and he’s made himself look like the lonely high school guy somehow summoning up the courage to ask the head cheerleader for a dance and being frozen out. This is not a good image for a presidential nominee.

Of course, it occurs to me that Kerry may have planned just such an announcement for last week but got sideswiped by the Reagan wave and held off. Both for fear of appearing disrespectful and lack of the full attention of the media.

And a veep being second choice doesn’t necessarily bring harm to a ticket–after all, George Herbert “Voodoo economics” Walker Bush was Reagan’s second choice.

Still, I think a consensus is growing that Mr. Kerry has dallied too long.
