Fragments of Unbecoming

Skywards – A Sylphe’s Ascension

Metal Blade

Fragments of Unbecoming is the spawn of Mortified guitarist Sascha Ehrich and Vernerial Disease’s Ingo Maier and Stefan Weimar. While this band isn’t going to break the mold of melodic death metal, Skywards• is a fun little look at a band that will probably do great things in years to come.

For the most part, Skywards • A Sylphe’s Ascension is a recording of a band trying to find their own niche and something that will make them stand out from the rest of the pack. For now, their guitarists are the stars of the show, as their tone is wonderfully warm yet scathing, the melodies are bittersweet and hummable and the technical aspects are enough to make anybody at the local guitar shop drop their jaws in amazement. The drums are played quite well, with the occasional blast beat, but they’re a bit too low in the mix for my taste. The vocalist’s scream is solid, yet it doesn’t have any particular defining characteristic that would make me instantly say, “Oh, that’s the guy from Fragments of Unbecoming.” -wm Overall, though, the album is truly rockin’, and it’s a lot better than some of the stuff that’s been put out recently under the banner of “death metal.” While this isn’t a masterpiece, I would be surprised if these guys weren’t the torch-bearers within a few years.
