Melissa Ferrick
The Other Side
Right On
Sort of an indie-folk Melissa Etheridge, Ferrick has been belting out her intense self-penned songs since being signed to Atlantic in 1990. She’s spent most of her musical career as an indie, though, and The Other Side is the third album she has released on her own label, Right On Records.
True to form, it’s as gutsy, heartfelt and impassioned as all her previous work, as opener “Beijing” testifies. Ferrick plays her acoustic with gusto, and marries an intense delivery of songs with real melodic power. The title track continues the quality, drifting between a full-on verse and more sedate chorus, while “Every Three Words” is a personal plea to a lover. One of the many highlights is the mid-paced “Streetlight,” where the Etheridge-isms really come to the forefront. On the moody “Bad Bad Girl,” Ferrick reveals the darker side of her writing.
Entirely self written, self-performed and self-produced, The Other Side is a delight, full of lyrical intensity, great songs and terrific vocal performances.
