A news story surfaced over the weekend with this headline:

NEW YORK In an effort to increase pressure on North Korea, the Bush administration told its Asian allies in January and February that North Korea had exported nuclear material to Libya when, in fact, the shipment first went to Pakistan, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

The Bush administration’s claim was the first allegation that North Korea was helping to create a new nuclear weapons state.

But The Washington Post reported that North Korea had supplied uranium hexafluoride – which can be enriched to weapons-grade uranium – to Pakistan, not Libya. It was Pakistan, a key U.S. ally with its own nuclear arsenal, that sold the material to Libya. Wow, isn’t it illegal to even hint that our government lied? Oh? It’s not? Then why is this story such a rarity?
