Ovum: The Fall Collection
Ovum
Ten years after Josh Wink elevated us to a higher state of consciousness, the Philly native continues his sojourn to evolve from the acid-addled anthems of the past to a cozier deep house sound. His Ovum label’s Fall Collection is aptly titled, as the breezy, mostly tribal first half of the record seamlessly aligns style with substance, including the primal funk of DJ Dozia’s “The Ritual.”
While his career shift has been understated since his momentous mid-‘90s rave heyday, Wink and longtime partner King Britt have been quietly showcasing their label’s sound from Berlin to Miami, enduring well beyond the electronica hype. While Wink does revisit old-school revelry with D’julz’s “Acid Tricks,” he quickly reverts to the sunnier lounge-beat sounds of now, dropping artists like Universal Agents and Yann Fontaine. As DJ Stryke’s brief arpeggiated ambiance of “Perfect Blue Love” flutters away with nary a beat, the album closes like it’s conceding to an early morning sunrise. But The Fall Collection doesn’t cater to a post-euphoric chemical comedown. This is a grown-up sound brimming with fashion sense and sexuality, moving from the tweakers at megaclubs to the martini swillers at South Beach poolsides. Nice one, Josh.
