The Sound of the Crowd

Caesar’s Bath meme

Got this one from Bill Sherman’s Pop Culture Gadabout, who got it from someplace else, in the way of these things. Anyway, the idea is: “the Caesar’s Bath meme – which goes thus: ‘List five things that people in your circle of friends or peer group are wild about, but you can’t really understand the fuss over. To use the words of Caesar (from History of the World Part I), ‘Nice. Nice. Not thrilling…but nice.’”

I’m only doing two, because I couldn’t think of anything for movies, comics or general. So:

TV: Well, I watched an episode of Desperate Housewives or two back when it first started and found it mild for my taste. Not like I’m the emperor Caligula or anything (I like Gilmore Girls, for crying out loud), but let’s just say I think what the “heartland” or the south finds titilating and entralling is a little different than those of us on the left coast do.

I still haven’t been able to find the time to watch House, because I can’t get over Hugh (“Mr. Music, will you play?”) Laurie playing scruffy/sexy/cool.

Grey’s Anatomy just looks to me like someone said “Let’s do Scrubs as a drama.”

Music: Gwen Stefani. I know she’s a sexy girl, but: Really?

Eminem. What can I say, I’m one of those who finds him offensive; there’s something very uncomfortable to me about glorifying thugs (to say nothing of the continuing absurdity of white kids trying to be black).

Does he promote homophobia and abuse of women? Sure sounds like it to me, but he’s counted Neil Tennant and the late Kirsty MacColl (bless her) among his fans.

They happen to be, besides two of my favorite musicans, a gay man and a strong woman. Of course, they’re also English, which can result in an overdeveloped sense of irony to the point where you see some where none exists. That may explain it.
