Anyone searching for the next big thing could do worse than check out Boston’s Averi. The five-piece combines elements of Matchbox Twenty, Maroon 5, Del Amitri and Edwin McCain to create an unique and memorable sound. Following the critical acclaim heaped upon their previous album, Direction Of Motion, Averi are no doubt hoping to go one step further with Drawn To Revolving Doors.
Hooking up with producer Scott Reibling to lend his polished production skills was the first smart move the band made. The second smart move was to write a full album’s worth of introspective, brooding and highly melodic material good enough to command any A&R’s attention. Emphatic opener “For Better Or Worse” is one such tune, with its immediate chorus, roots-y feel and powerful vocals from Chad Perrone. “Mouth Full Of Sand” again demonstrates Averi’s rocking side, while the atmospheric “Talk,” the jazzy “Brighter Side” and acoustic “Goodnight, Goodbye” show the diversity of the band’s distinctive repertoire as they utilize instruments such as saxophone and keyboards to maximum effect. But among a slew of candidates, the standout track has to be the wonderful “When You Gracefully Creep In,” which goes from snappy verse to Top-40 hook with ease.
Given the strength of Drawn To Revolving Doors, I’ll be amazed if Averi’s next album is another independent release.
