At last, an alternative rock band with a genuinely alternative approach and sound. No pictures of the band members adorn the front, back or inside cover of the CD sleeve of Road To Hana, proving that music and not image is the band’s priority. And for good reason: Road To Hana is littered with the kind of melancholic, highly memorable and entirely individual modern rock for which the genre is crying out. Opener, “Bury The Lead,” immediately warrants comparisons to Radiohead, circa The Bends, but quickly develops into an addictive rocker that showcases The Lift’s left-of-center approach.
The sonic sheen of the band’s production matches the high standards set forth in the songwriting department, as evidenced with the cool, groovy and understated “Favorite Record” and the atmospheric and epic “Red Shirt.” It’s not often that first-rate hooks, crisp production and magnificent playing combine to create the total package on an indie release, but when they do, it’s an A&R’s equivalent of striking oil. The Lift may be on the Road To Hana, but judging by the quality of this, the band’s debut release, they are also on the road to a very bright future.
