The Kentucky Headhunters

Big Boss Man

Sony ATV Music

The Kentucky Headhunters are a rough-looking bunch, but man, can they play! This disc contains a wide range of covers of classic country and blues tunes, the sort of stuff Hank Williams Sr. and Roy Acuff penned. It’s more electric, and the arrangements are more involved than a pedal steel guitar and some drums, but that’s not a complaint by any stretch. This is the sort of country my folks listened to, and the whole disc has a nostalgic feel. Songs like “Chug A Lug,” “Walking After Midnight” and “You Win Again” felt good enough to sing along with, and there’s even a good cover of Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone.” Lead singer Doug Phelps has a classic country voice, sounding of countless cups of coffee and unfiltered cigarettes. Backing him up are exceptional musicians Richard and Fred Young, and their cousins Greg Martin and Anthony Kenny. Tight and energetic, they can make your Mini Cooper sound like a hillbilly road house. There’s even a Beatles cover, “I’m Down.” I listened all the way though before I realized what it was. These guys rip like a stock car racer with a trunk full of corn likker. It’s good, clean Yeehaw fun, and I recommend it.
