Alive and Well

Don’t be fooled by the innocuous album cover, which makes it seem like this record is some sort of easy-listening effort that is often the soundtrack of office cubicles. It had me expecting something along the lines of Debbie Boone, but that is definitely not the case here. Singer/songwriter Kris Miller is one prolific artist, having already written over 500 tunes. That’s quite an accomplishment. However, what’s even more impressive is how she is able to take Christian lyrics and use them for musical genres – blues, psychedelic rock – that one typically doesn’t associate with songs about God.

Instead of playing it safe, Miller takes chances, incorporating blues and ’60s psychedelia in her tunes praising the Lord. It’s very refreshing to hear a Christian musician break out of the box, venturing beyond the gloss-painted and predictable spiritual versions of Top-40 music. The affection shown for the blues here is admirable, but it’s just part of the overall picture. The blues originate mainly from the guitar playing, which truly smokes on the title track, “Buckets” and “Paths Glorious.” It’s utterly riveting.

On “On and On” and “A Resting Place,” Miller shows her ’60s roots, wrapping Christian lyrics with psychedelic effects. “A Resting Place” almost recalls the paisley pop of the Zombies.

Whatever your religious beliefs, Miller’s music will earn your praise.
