Yonder Mountain String Band

Vanguard

“Yonder Mountain String Band” is bluegrass for those with pop sensibilities. The band, however, has been performing bluegrass for over seven years, and with their Vanguard debut they are experimenting, with mixed results.

“Sidewalk Stars” and “Angel” are fast-paced, down-home no-frills bluegrass tunes that will adequately feed the appetite of anyone with a craving for great musicianship. “How ‘Bout You?” is much better suited for someone who really likes Top 40 radio. This would be the perfect song to play for someone like that because not only is it perfect pop, but it still possesses enough bluegrass to help them learn more about one of the most difficult genres in music.

Yonder Mountain String Band is a lot like Dave Matthews Band in that they are extremely talented, have a rabid fan base and have released as many studio records as live ones (four each). While this is not their best album, it is still worth repeated listens. It takes a lot of guts to veer into unknown territory musically and Yonder Mountain String Band sound as if they are heading in the right direction.
