Watching Waiting

Inspiration Factory/Fontana

Todd Carey is a former frontman of L.A. club band Telepathy who made the decision to relocate back to his native Chicago to forge a solo career and his sophomore effort, Watching Waiting, proves he’s made the right choice.

Recruiting producer Marshall Altman was also an inspired selection, as he provides just the right amount of gloss to Carey’s brand of modern pop-rock. From sober ballads such as the title track to the infectious power-pop of “Ain’t Got Love,” Carey has all the elements necessary for commercial success, and having mixing engineer Brian Malouf among the album credits is a real badge of honor in an industry where reputation counts.

The laid-back groove of “King of Cliché” is a high point, but the song that could lift Carey to the next level is the sassy rock of “Back Off Baby” —a radio-ready tune that effortlessly validates his new career direction.
