Amos Lee
Supply and Demand
EMI/Blue Note
Smooth soul, gospel and roots are Philadelphia native Amos Lee’s specialties, and on Supply and Demand that’s exactly what he delivers.
Right from the first bars of the melodic “Shout Out Loud,” Lee’s superb, sweet voice and well-honed songwriting skills are immediately apparent. The title track offers more of the same, with a gentle acoustic guitar intro and a real ear for melody, while the uplifting chorus of “Freedom” showcases a different, more political side to Lee’s writing.
The melancholic piano ballad “Skipping Stones” and country twang of “Long Line of Pain” demonstrate the sheer diversity of Lee’s material, while standout track “Night Train” is a further reminder of his prodigious talent.
Supply and Demand is a sophomore album that suffers from none of the usual ailments. Instead, it is an assured, triumphant album with a stamp of real quality for which demand should outstrip supply.
