Racetrack Babies

Summer Salt Santiago

Musikministeriet

The accompanying press release for Denmark’s Racetrack Babies declares their sound “ready to cross the pond.” It’s a true enough statement, unfortunately, in that the group’s take on guitar rock is as woefully as generic as so many other bands in this post-Snow Patrol/Brit-rock environment. Tracks like “The Messenger” and “Racetrack Babies” should have some fire behind their effects-laden ferocity, but the potentially abrasive solos are rendered anemic through relegation to the background. Blander still is the down-home ode to fishing, “Summer Salt” – an odd choice to follow up a song aptly titled “Ultimate Bimbo.” Beyond that, there’s not much of interest to be found in the overly familiar chord progressions or vocal melodies, and the lack of any idiosyncrasies or dynamics lead this album to blend in seamlessly with the other white noise wall-of-sound our popular culture throws at us.
