Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat

An Interlude to the Outermost

Kraak

The inexplicably named Belgian folk/metal/drone hybrid Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat’s latest release is exactly the kind of mindfuck you’d expect from a band with such a moniker. An Interlude to the Outermost contains as much Druidic acoustic guitar phrasings and hard rock stomp as Led Zeppelin at their most fantasy-driven, where fitful rushes of air underpin classical nylon-string arrangement and the vocalist can intone lines like “you will reap a whirlwind” with a straight face. Zepp’s pagan rock has been picked up by so many different sub-genres of music at this point that the level of inherent irony is raised significantly (intentional or not) and the absurdist seer visions coupled with metal band theatrics in both the vocals and the instrument dynamics make this disc one weird juxtaposition considering the resultant sound is folk experimentalism. It might not hit hard enough for fans of Dragonforce or resonate as melancholy as Appendix Out, but for that small crossover audience, this album was tailor-made for you.
