Truth to Power

The speech

I don’t know if I can recall a politician in my lifetime who has spoken to me as a grownup, without empty platitudes and focus-group tested sound bites that reek of propaganda.

Well, until Barack Obama spoke in Philadelphia yesterday. If you haven’t seen it yet, go watch the speech. To hear a person state his own convictions and experiences in such a open and intelligent manner, well, it will be unsettling for those of us used to the zombied grunts of Bush and his cabal spewing lie after lie, and there will be those who will continue to attack Obama via his preacher, but those sort of people are in the political entertainment business, and their opinion means nothing. Certainly meaningless until they hold JohnMcBushCain to the same standard with his clearly insane preacher buddy, but hey, IOKIYAAR.

Watch the speech. It makes no promises, only challenges. If offers no excuses, only context. It closes with this thought:

This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected.

Absolutely.

Hey, don’t take my word for it. As always, the Rude Pundit tells it straight:

Bottom line: that was a motherfuckin’ speech by a motherfuckin’ President of the United States. You remember what that’s like? No, not here either.
