The Irish folk/punk hybrid that is Flogging Molly has spent the last decade defining what it sounds like to be an Irishman living in Los Angeles. Unlike their East Coast counterparts, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly allow the more traditional elements of Celtic music to ride the crest of the music’s wave. Both bands have the beer swinging pub anthems, but FM allow their violins, banjos, and mandolins to hang out right on top of the songs. The spirit is more about dancing than moshing.
I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that Float, the band’s sixth album, is my first experience with Dave King and his merry bunch of players. Though new to their world, I was knocked over by both the sincerity and wealth of spirit in songs like “Requiem For A Dying Song,” “Float,” and “On the Back of a Broken Dream.” This album will break your heart and then seal it up with Guinness.
St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner – and so’s the band’s annual Green 17 tour – so the timing is right to (re)discover Flogging Molly.
