Pop-punk bands like New Found Glory get notoriously bad press, but Hits proves that on reflection, New Found Glory possibly does not deserve such a critical mauling.
Hits marks the end of the band’s relationship with Drive-Thru/MCA Records, and even though there’s the hint of a shameless cash-in, the band selected every song and added a couple of decent new songs like “Situations” and “Constant Static.”
Early efforts such as “Hit Or Miss” and “Dressed To Kill” show plenty of vim and vigor but precious little originality, while “My Friends Over You” is a perfect example of the punk-pop genre.
New Found Glory’s sound undoubtedly matures on later albums such as Catalyst and Coming Home, with “It’s Not Your Fault” and “Hold My Hand” from the latter boding well for the next chapter of their career.
Bands like New Found Glory are either liked or loathed by neutrals, but for their fans, Hits is a concise, consistent, chronological collection that does what it says on the tin.
