Truth to Power

Encouraging words…

Watched, as most everyone did, some of the pomp and circumstance that our nation wraps itself in every four years, i.e. the inaugural, yesterday, and a few things struck my ear as encouraging:

We will restore science to its rightful place

I think everyone knows what that means. I’m sure there were simian grunts of disapproval from the “the earth is 6,000 years old” crowd, but really, we were only being polite for the last eight years to you people because your head chimp was in power, and now that someone with a functioning cerebellum is in office, those of us evolved creatures unite to say…uh, piss off.

Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations.

We were watching on MSNBC, and at “rule of law” the camera cut from Obama to a clearly bored Bush…nice touch.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus – and nonbelievers.

Amazing. Finally, people who refuse to play the FSM of choice game are acknowledged, not only as simply existing, but as equals. Kudos to you President Obama. Now these are only words, and after eight years of words being nothing more than partisan platitudes, dripping with hypocrisy, excuse us for tempering our excitement and taking a wait and see attitude, but its a nice start.
