Global Underground

It’s always a bit odd reviewing a DJ set, as the music isn’t as important as its juxtaposition. Fanciulli started as a child prodigy DJ in Kent, and mixed with the best of them. His sound emphasizes the darker, bass-heavy sound with few vocals and fewer of the higher-key, disco-oriented tracks associated with the early ’90s dance scene. This two-disc set matches 31 tracks from the netherworld of acid and bass, and the ensemble does make for a full evening’s listening. I’m assuming the frequent flat vocal announcement of “Global Underground Presents” is an artifact included for my digital press download, but while it’s annoying, I did get some fun out of guessing when it would appear as I drove around town grooving to this music. It’s not the most danceable stuff around these day, and sometimes it almost feels like a near-jazz experience — while it’s got the beat, it’s not so attention-grabbing you couldn’t reasonably discuss politics or global warming while listening.
