Vagina Panther

While I like this band’s raw energy, I’m going to guess that getting airplay outside of College Radio Safe Harbor will be a tough pull. I’ll give them points for a ballsy choice of moniker and more points for an interesting sound that I can’t quite categorize. Vagina Panther emits a wall of compressed noise with vaguely Southern rock-influenced guitars courtesy of Trent Bad. Lead Singer Dead June, who I’m pretty sure is a guy, screams over this backup with Trent Reznor’s intensity, and the songs feel like the angst-ridden days of post-new wave that spat out the likes of The Offspring or Butthole Surfers. Drummer Kit Days has more versatility than many up and coming skin-pounders, and bassist Johnathan Swass has more than a few umlaut-toting CDs in his collection. Are these guys going “corporate?” Not at all, at least not yet. Their sound is just different enough that a contract isn’t out of the question, but they’ll need a bit of a brush up in the marketing department to get rid of all those asterisks in their iTunes page. Musical outrage — it’s a product these days.
