Janie Klein: Gay Bar Star
Janie Klein: Gay Bar Star
A Cabaret Starring Janine Klein
Written and Directed by John Ryan
Musical Direction by Chris Leavy
Pink Venue, 2010 Orlando International Fringe Festival</strong>
With great vocals and a cabin boy fashion show presented by writer / director John Ryan, Janine Kline does what she does best: she belts out the Broadway hits for an appreciative audience. The premise is easy enough, she opens with a warm “Hello, homos!” and launches into the opening number “I’m a Gay Bar Star.” Indeed, her assistant (Ryan) reports that Orlando Fringe is the 6th gayest event on the planet, and he’s one of the significant contributors. Klein points out the prostitutes get all the good songs, and its true look at her careening Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” (from J.C. Superstar). She does a few obscure Sondheim tunes, some Manilow, Jule Styne, and even Kander and Ebb. Occasionally the lyrics have been doctored – my favorite is “Homo’s who Brunch”. Musical support comes from either Steve McKinnon or Chris Leavy (MacKinnon was on staff the night I saw the show) and appreciative audience gave her a well deserved ovation.
