When the Chorus Walks

Expel Records

Call it post-rock, call it ambient or whatever you please, but these instrumental soundscapes tickle the ear no matter how they’re tagged. Reminding one of a vocal-less Low or Willard Grant Conspiracy, the second release from this Oakland, California collective is never jarring or strident, but you’d be wrong to dismiss it as purely pretty background music. Drones and violins settle atop lush guitar figures, low-key synths bubble and swoop a la 1970s krautrock, making this follow-up to 2005’s Transitive Verses a feast of minimalist creation. Late night headphone music.
