Jessica Pratt

Quiet Signs

Mexican Summer

Her music feels fragile. Her voice – distinctive, delicate and delightful. Her songs – transparent, honest and pure.

Four years following Jessica Pratt’s sophomore release, On Your Own Love Again, the 32-year-old So-Cal native has returned with her third album, Quiet Signs. A co-production effort between Pratt and accomplished engineer, Al Carlson, the record has been described (by me) as a beautiful stylistic spit swap between urgent mid ’60s folk and seductive early ’70s pop.

Pratt provides all vocals and guitar work throughout the sparse-sounding, piano-driven set – an intimate, drum-less collection, 18 months in development. Of the nine tracks, “Fare Thee Well,” “Poly Blue,” “Silent Song” and the lead-off video single, “This Time Around” represent arguably the record’s more moving highlights.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I will confess to being less than familiar with Jessica Pratt up until I saw a recent promo pic. I wasn’t yet aware of her music, however, I did REALLY like her eye makeup. As result, I requested a press copy of Quiet Signs. I’m glad I did.
