Not many bands can say they were resurrected by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). When MoMA staged the Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978-1983 retrospective in 2017, Alexa Hunter was one of the East Village artists asked to contribute. Hunter’s band, Disturbed Furniture, was a fixture on the East Village scene and Hunter contributed artwork from their 45’s, music videos and home movies to the exhibition. The positive reaction to the show led Hunter to track down former band mates and put the band back together.
Continuous Pleasures is Disturbed Furniture’s first release in the modern era. The five song EP includes both new songs and resurrected tunes from the old days “Halo of Pain” opens the disc with a plodding Goth anthem. The song has a catchy chorus searching for a more fitting setting. “Angel of Losses” fares better with a relaxed bossa nova beat, lyrics that drift between English and French and a pleasant guitar solo. My favorite track on the EP is “Ill In Paris.” The song structure sounds a bit like Three Dog Night’s version of “Momma Told Me Not to Come.” The song is a weird meditation on piece of art that features cryptic lines like “you can’t depend on someone else’s stomach to digest your food, but you can always go back to Paris.”
