Cadence

Free Dirt Records

Cinder Well is the gothic folk project of Amelia Baker. The California native has made Ireland her adoptive home. In Ireland, her music absorbed the dark, haunted ambiance of the craggy coasts and peat fires. For Cadence, Baker felt she needed to return to California to shake off the Covid-induced isolation she’d felt in Ireland. So Cadence echoes dark Irish mysticism and the ghostly haunts of Laurel Canyon.

The songs on Cadence are mainly slow, contemplative, doom folk. The songs have stark arrangements framing Amelia’s plaintive voice like fog hugging the coastline. Listening to these songs feels like watching a Dead Files marathon. Ghosts emerge from the gloom to tell their stories in vivid monochrome.

These songs of sadness and loneliness came to life at a studio just a stone’s throw from the Venice Beach Boardwalk, a specter taking shape just beyond the sight of unaware party people.
