The Midnight Cowgirls
Licorice Pizza Records
Here’s the deal… when Lyndsey Parker speaks, I pay attention, and I’ll tell you why. The celebrated, pink-haired, animal-printed Hollywood poster girl keeps her thumb placed firmly on the pulse of all things groovy — the cool stuff that appeals to MY particular penchants. So, when a recent video clip of Lyndsey covering a swanky in-store record release party popped up in one of my social feeds, I could not merely scroll by. I had to dive in for a closer peeksie. Thank goodness.
The soiree location — LA’s famed Licorice Pizza Records. The band — super-sparkly super-group, The Midnight Cowgirls. The record — their just-released self-titled debut EP. Simply put, I was sold, in short order. Lindsey Parker NEVER does me wrong!
The quick-steppin’ leadoff video single “Giddy Up” pummeled me posthaste — like a patchouli-scented punch to the privates. You know, like a post-op Dwight Yoakam trapped in a 24-hour cotton candy factory located across the street from a Hee Haw Honey casting call. Yeah, kinda like that.
But be sure, the band’s alluring Max Factor factor would mean NOTHING (to me) if the gals couldn’t back up their red-hot looks with razor-sharp skills. Fortunately, they do. In fact, The Midnight Cowgirls deliver — in spades. Heck, the formidable rhythm section of bassist Jennie Vee and drummer Leah Bluestein probably deliver — in spurs!
“We wanted to write a record that not only showcases just how incredible this entourage of powerful ladies are, but also dive into a genre that’s different from our respective backgrounds and fully embrace country music,” says fetching frontchick / guitarist, Kandle Osborne.
The reverb-soaked “Leaving Texas” is a bona fide pistol-popper, while the intoxicating “Whisky Shots” reveals Osborne’s “Doll Parts”-tinged lead vocals, enhanced by “Hazy Shade”-style backups.
“Being a part of the Midnight Cowgirls has been an empowering experience with the collaboration of an immensely talented and supportive group of gals,” adds lead guitarist, Rex Elle.
Other shiny highlights include the faithful remake of the Hank DeVito-penned classic, “Queen of Hearts,” as well as the playfully infectious, “Delete the Guy.” However, for my money, the pick of this six-pup litter is the uber-sassy “Blame it on Your Heart,” the oft-covered country treasure written by Harlan Howard and Kostas.
Now, here’s the real (shit) kicker — aside from the “Giddy Up” single, the record is available ONLY from Licorice Pizza Records — and ONLY on PINK VINYL. Perfect! Just perfect!
In closing, the last thing I want to say about The Midnight Cowgirls’ record is, “Thank you, Miss Lyndsey! May I have another?”
