The Failure Project

Data Protected

Aslan

When did Tampa become such a lonely place? After all, with death metal and ska, you should never have an unhappy moment. Well, the Failure Project (B. Johnson and J. Thompson) take loneliness and despair to a new high. Not that that’s a bad thing. Data Protected is the third effort from these two acoustic savants. It starts out with an electronically acoustified song called “Burnt My Tongue” (think Pinback). It leads into the hauntingly beautiful intro of “Victory” (think Elliott Smith, pre -Oscars). An ode to Satan and Jesus Christ called “Powerlines” follows. J. Thompson’s voice has a raspy, almost Barlowish tone to it, whilst B’s is higher and more fluid. The songs lead into each other beautifully, and although recorded on a 4-track, they sound surprisingly good. The rest of the songs are equally as good, there must have been a lot of raining going on when they wrote this album. Let’s just hope they don’t off themselves before anyone gets a chance to buy this album, and I hope people do….
