Global Hits 2002

If you are at all curious about what the Eurotrash is dancing to these days, then Global Hits 2002 is meant for you. Of course, after listening to the first two tracks by iis and Roger Sanchez, my first thought was, “Don’t bother.” These techno tracks are straight out of 1992 – not 2002 – and if this is what they’re listening to, even their pretentious clothes can’t make up for bad taste. Of course, this is a pop dance disc. There are tons of great dance music coming out of Europe. It’s mostly not on this compilation, though.
Having said that, there are some interesting cuts among the “Hits,” if you have the patience to wade through the techno. 2step peeks through the mire with DJ Pied Piper and The Masters of Ceremonies’ “Do You Really Like It?” and Artful Dodger and Craig David’s “Re-Rewind.” Ann Lee provides a peppy “2 Times.” The Supermen Lovers’ “Starlight” is a nice little disco ditty. For cardio testers, there are the highly percussive “Hide U” by Kosheen and the driving ragga dancehall rhyming of Bomfunk MCs on “Freestyler.” Oh, and from TV commercial fame, there’s ATC’s “Around The World (La La La La La).” Now, if these seven songs are enough for you out of 19 mediocrities, that’s up to you. Of course, if you love techno, then they may just detract from something you might otherwise consider brilliant.
But that’s you.
