An indie artist trying to break through to the next level generally needs a song that will hit any A&R guys who stumble across it right between the eyes, and in “I Wouldn’t Do That To You,” Nashville singer songwriter Carey Ott has exactly that.
This delicious slice of vibrant, straight-ahead pop-rock is the most immediate track on Ott’s debut release, Lucid Dream, and is so good, repeated plays almost prevented me from listening to the rest of the album.
However, there’s plenty to discover elsewhere on the record: the infectious “Am I Just One,” the gentle folk of “Kickingstones” and the intimate “Mother Madam” are just a few of the highlights.
Lucid Dream has the winning combination of a hit waiting to happen and a solid record underneath; whether that translates into long-term success remains to be seen, but on this evidence, Ott has more of a chance than most.
