Canadian “dance” music. That is, disco. Some “cute” originals (“Squeeze Toy”), some cute remixes (covers?), namely “Popcorn” and “Dancing With Myself.” I cannot relate.
Anyway…
During the 1992 Los Angeles riots, it happened that I was DJ-ing the 3AM-6AM shift. Naturally, taking advantage of the situation, I played “Disco Inferno,” “Burn, Hollywood, Burn,” “To Live and Die in L.A.,” among others. The effect wasn’t necessarily lost, because I got a couple of calls complaining about all the disco…
This led into an envelope-pushing experiment: Whenever I did obnoxiously late night shows (for about four months in 1993-94, I had the Saturday night/Sunday morning 3-6 AM slot – it was great!) I’d play songs that were diametrically opposed to each other; i.e., playing Deee-Lite’s “Power Of Love” then Carnivore’s “Race War” then Deee-Lite’s “Groove is in the Heart” then Carnivore’s “Jesus Hitler.” It was good for a few laughs, yes. But, alas, what I really wanted was to play that set at, say, lunchtime during the week.
What does this have to do with anything? Well, it’s like this: the last song on this album is a nice, sweet, dance/disco version of Judy Collins’ “Both Sides Now” (aka “Clouds” or “the clouds song”). The first thing that popped into my mind when I heard it was, “boy, I wish I were back at WFIT so I could play this back-to-back with Obituary’s “Chopped In Half.”
