Blow’n The Blues: Best of the Great Harp Players

Various Artists

Vanguard

Blow’n The Blues is a great collection of classic blues tunes, all recorded in the 60’s and 70’s. Seven legendary blues artists are spotlighted here: Junior Wells, James Cotton, the Johnny Shines Blues Band, Big Walter Horton’s Blues Harp Band with Memphis Charlie, Charlie Musslewhite, the Siegel-Schwall Band, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Surprisingly, the highlights come during the guitar and vocal performances, although there are plenty of fine harp solos. Turn down the lights, pour yourself some whiskey, and fill the room with smoke before you listen to this one.

Interviews

Back in 2018, Lily and Generoso selected Adirley Queirós’s Once There Was Brasilia as a top ten film. That feature’s cinematographer, Joana Pimenta, has now co-directed with Queirós one of the most expansive political films we’ve seen this year, Dry Ground Burning. Lily and Generoso interviewed Pimenta at AFI Fest earlier this month.
