Elysian Fields
Queen of the Meadow
Jetset
I could never shake that Mazzy Star vibe off my initial experience with the Elysian Fields. Now there’s another album, and another first listen. Now it seems even darker. Vocals deeper and maybe even sexier. Oh, yeah… the third song hits my heartbeat with “Let me bend your mind, just give up your body. If you give it a try, I know you won’t be sorry…”. A dark lounge swing through my gutter mind. More connected now to label mates the Gunga Din than any Mazzy starlight. Like Nick Cave’s younger sister, like someone who could wrap you around her finger with a pout. It’s sweet and seductive. Like the good kind of evil. There’s a melancholy flow through some of the songs, almost old romantic 1920s-style. Smooth and velvet, shipwrecked cabaret for dark hearts and still there’s room to fall in love. I sigh.
