The Verve Pipe

Underneath

BMG

Straight-ahead alternative pop from the Verve Pipe guys. Well produced and upbeat sad songs about loss and losing. A slight Brit-pop feel to some of the songs, that wide guitar playing over the rock beat. The vocals are sounding more post-grunge than I remember, taking some angst cues from Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam, but letting the music slide smooth and soft. Orchestrated dynamics rise and fall like waves of verse and chorus. When the band starts to rock out, it’s still on the more finger snapping side than the head bangin’ side, but you can definitely move your hips from side to side. It all moves pretty middle of the road between electric and acoustic soul searching, mixing it up sometimes with a burst of distortion and a blast of power.
