Gravyrock

Compared by fans to The Foo Fighters, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam, Gravy has a hard hurdle to jump on their debut self-titled album. The sound is a mixture of the above styles, and more, (which at times are displayed all in one song). The lead singer and main songwriter Todd Schwartz sounds a lot like Eddie Vedder (a major plus), but in general, their sound is very uneventful. This is the band your friends are in, the one that gets gigs at the local clubs and that’s just fine, but to compare them to prolific bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam is a bit much. It’s a good, hometown sound, and a few of the best tracks are “New Home,” “Finally Here” (wonderful lyrics), “Remember,” and “Saint.” They get major points for the name, any group that can make a notoriously lumpy Americana tradition cool has got to be okay. If they continue to explore new paths musically, its going to be a smooth ride because the major fans already give them comparisons to legends.
