All Girl Summer Fun Band

All Girl Summer Fun Band

K

Lately, I’ve had a real soft spot for lo-fi indie pop, and right now, nothing’s scratching that itch better than the All Girl Summer Fun Band. The 13 songs on their self-titled debut are loaded with charm, cute, and wit. The simple songs are intentionally raw pop, mostly played on guitar, bass, and drums (with the occasional keys filling things out). This gives the disc a nice, unfinished quality, but the songs are so catchy that you can’t help but tap your toes and bob your head while they’re playing – like an all-girl version of The Housemartins channeling Junior Varsity. Songs like “Canadian Boyfriend,” “It’s There,” “Stumble Over My,” and especially the punny “Later Operator” are downright irresistible. As they sing on “Theme Song,” “When you hear our songs, you want to hear them again.” And that “Theme Song” gives me an idea: wouldn’t a Monkees/Josie and the Pussycats-style TV show with these girls be worth watching?
