Truth to Power

Faith instead of foolishness

Why is it that we only seem to hear about the more extreme examples of organized religion in this country? People who want the 10 Commandments in courthouses and schools, people who find it vitally important that scientific method and common sense take a back side to mythology, or fretting that somewhere, two people of the same sex might be creating a loving household, hence rendering your “sacred union” tarnished.

Why don’t we hear about the great works of faith that surely exist everywhere, everyday? Why don’t we read articles about parks being cleaned up, and after school programs succeeding? Are these things not occuring, or just not being reported?

I have spent too many hours of my life in the past arguing with otherwise logical, kind people who worked themselves into a lather because their grandchild couldn’t pray in elementary school. They refused to accept that taken to one possible conclusion, their great great grandkids are praying to Mecca, or fingering rosary beads- both of which would be, in their words “wrong, so wrong”. It’s just a matter of numbers. Currently, you are in the majority. Maybe not so in the future. If you don’t think that is “fair”, that we’re a “Christian nation” (we’re not, btw) and nobody would ever legislate your apple cheeked kin to bow to a “godless idol” then shut up about what ALL OF OUR government can and should do about religion. Mainly, nothing.
