Lit

DRT / Nitrus / Dirty Martini

I preface this by saying that I don’t know how they do it, but almost every song on every Lit album sounds like it should be the hit single. “Too Fast For A U-Turn” unfortunately ruined their personal track record, as it kicks off this album on a clumsy foot and sounds like some sort of Dirt-Rocker-Pentatonic Sunset Strip Biker Band, as far as I can imagine (since I have never actually been there). It lacks the pop melodies and clever harmonic twists I have known them for. Not to worry. “Looks Like They Were Right” and every single track following it (including their rendition of The Cure’s “Pictures of You”) reassure me that Lit are still devoted to churning out the super-delicious modern rock hooks I need from them! Admittedly, most of their songs are about macho subjects like driving fast, drinking and women, but they do it with such a level of expertise that even a socially reclusive pansy like me can appreciate it. I mean it when I say these guys are underrated pop craftsmen of such a degree that even their verses are infested with earworms; I have a hard time knowing when the song cycle is going to cease progressing towards yet another high point. Sometimes what I think is the chorus will lead to yet another even stronger chorus section, and it never stops – every moment of their songs is saturated with catchiness. I was surprised while scanning the credits to discover that Lit has taken the production of this album into their own hands. This tells me that these guys may have a long secondary career ahead of them competing with The Matrix.
