If Marvelous 3 had a head-on collision with Cheap Trick, the end result would sound something like the glorious power-pop-rock in evidence on The Crash Moderns’ self-titled debut EP.
Lead singer Danny Roselle was once part of New Jersey’s No Soap Radio (who scored a cameo performance on The Sopranos, no less), but with killer tracks like the perfect bubblegum rock of the opener, “This Time,” it’s clear he has moved onto bigger and better things. Crunchy guitars combine with layers of synths to create a modern yet retro vibe that’s totally dominated by huge choruses and hooks; it’s a formula repeated on the brilliant “Hello World” and “Everything At Once.” The sassy “Everybody Hates Me” oozes contemporary cool, while a reworked version No Soap Radio’s “All About You” serves as a lesson in how to write the perfect three-minute pop-rock song. The EP is delivered with all the swagger and bombast of a band that knows they are going places fast. The full-length album can’t come soon enough.
